How Remember My Service Came to Be

For nearly a decade, the RMS parent company, StoryRock, has developed the leading multimedia technology in the country for high school and collegiate yearbooks, partnering with such leading yearbook publishers as Jostens and Lifetouch. Due to our expertise in multimedia history, we were approached by the senior leadership of the largest geographical Army Reserve Division in the country, the 96th RRC of the US Army Reserve at Ft. Douglas, Utah, which happened to be located near our company headquarters in Salt Lake City.

This relationship resulted in the first-of-its-kind historical record. An unprecedented unit history incorporated hundreds of pages with photos, video, narration, documents, text, weblinks, and hyperlinks—all on one CD-ROM. This multimedia project allowed Servicemembers and their families instant access to all the year’s events collectively shared by the unit.

RMS is a complete interactive experience, and not a DVD slide show. Major General Peter S. Cooke, Commander of the 96th RRC, recognized that a simple DVD 'slide show' would not be a historical record. In addition to the flags, coins, and medals awarded to their deployed Soldiers, the 96th were also highly motivated to provide an RMS to each Soldier as additional recognition of their service. MG Cooke wanted to help his Servicemembers tell the story to their children and grandchildren of how they answered the call to duty, and who the other brave men and women were who served alongside them.

The 96th also used RMS to connect the tasks of both the unit Historians and the Public Affairs Officers to collect and organize historical data. Most Servicemembers, even general officers, never see the statistics, interviews, or other historical data, much less take them home to share with their family and friends. The 96th RRC intended to consolidate all such data, much like the online version of “social media,” to create one collective story using all modern communication tools.
